A proud 1993 graduate of Jess Lanier High School (Bessemer City High) and Lawson State Community College and Associate of Science Degree recipient from Fortis College, Mrs. Lakia Reeves is honored to be a candidate for Bessemer City Council, District 6.
A proud Bessemer native and resident, Mrs. Reeves told us, “This city is more than my hometown—it is the community that shaped my values, character and commitment to serving others. The people of Bessemer’s District Six are my neighbors, family and friends and that’s why I’ve chosen to seek this particular office to see to it not one person is ever overlooked or unheard.”
For more than 31 years, Reeves has served the public as a licensed cosmetologist, while the last fifteen years led her to work within the healthcare field. These two significant career paths have allowed Lakia to care for people throughout every walk of life, furthering her education in compassion, patience, integrity and the importance of listening before leading.
She told us, “My decision to run for City Council is deeply personal. Growing up in Bessemer I watched my family, neighbors, and community leaders work tirelessly to advocate improvements in our neighborhoods. Many of those same challenges still exist today, and instead of waiting for someone else to make a difference, I decided to step forward and be a part of the solution.”
If elected for Bessemer’s District 6, Reeves is looking to improve our neighborhoods by reducing blight and strengthening infrastructure with a vision to seeing our communities cleaner, safer and more attractive for families to be proud to live within, businesses excited to invest and for future generations to thrive.
“I believe our children are our greatest investment, and they deserve safe neighborhoods, quality educational opportunities, positive mentors and recreational programs that encourage growth, leadership and success. But we must also honor and support our senior citizens by ensuring they have access to the services, resources and respect they deserve,” Reeves also stated passionately.
As a woman of faith, Reeves seeks God’s wisdom and guidance upon every decision she makes, believing leadership is not about power, but service. Promising to lead with honesty, integrity, transparency, accountability and respect for every resident of District 6, she told us, “I respectfully ask for your prayers, trust and your vote. Together we can build stronger neighborhoods, create greater opportunities and ensure a brighter future for the city of Bessemer. I would be honored to serve as your next City Council Representative for District 6.”
We wish Mrs. Reeves and all our great visionaries as well as our residents much future success and triumph as we learn to work together as she has stated.
Don’t forget to vote and ensure your voice is heard on this upcoming election day. See you at the polls.
