Composer, musician and compatriot, Bobby Horton of Vestavia Hills is an asset to the music and history profession.

A native of Birmingham, Horton’s lifelong fervor for music and history, has contributed to him being recognized as a leading authority of Civil War period music.

Horton is a noted music historian and has recorded 16 volumes of authentic Civil War tunes, playing all the period instruments and singing all the parts.

This seasoned performer is a founding member of the musical trio, Three On A String. For over 50 years the group has entertained audiences throughout the United States and Canada.

At a recent patriot grave marking ceremony held at historic Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Hueytown, Horton was invited to perform the musical salute.

The salute was in memory of the American Revolution patriot the Rev. Capt. James M. Tarrant, Sr. (1753-1840). The Birmingham Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution sponsored the event.

For the ceremony, Horton played the 1770, iconic, patriotic hymn, Chester and God Bless America.

Horton has also performed and produced musical scores for 19 PBS films by Ken Burns, 23 films for the National Park Service and two films for the A&E Network.

The mission statement of the Sons of the American Revolution organization is to “Honor the Revolutionary War patriot ancestors by promoting patriotism, serving our communities and educating and inspiring future generations about the founding principles of our country.”
