Councilman Chester Porter elected president of Bessemer City Council

One of the first orders of business at the start of a new Bessemer City Council term is the election of the president of the Bessemer City Council.

At the City Council Oct. 6 meeting, District 2 Councilman Chester W. Porter was elected president of the Bessemer City Council.

Councilman Jarvis Collier nominated Councilman Porter for city council president.

Councilwoman Cynthia Donald nominated Councilman Cleo King for city council president.

A motion was made and seconded to close the nominations.

The council voted on the nomination of Councilman Porter, and following the roll call, Porter received four ayes and three nays. Councilman Porter was elected.

“I look forward to the continued growth of the city of Bessemer and to continue working with the city council and the newly elected mayor,” said Councilman Porter.

He thanked his colleagues for their trust and support in electing him president.

He also acknowledged former City Council President Jarvis Collier for his outstanding service and leadership.
