A former member of the Bessemer Coalition for many years under the leadership of the late Mayor Quitman Mitchell Jr., Valerie Williams believes the city of Bessemer deserves leadership that listens, works hard and fights for opportunities for the city’s children and seniors.
Her background taught her that perseverance, hard work and staying true to oneself are the way to succeed for the benefit of others. A member of the Bessemer Chamber of Commerce, Williams worked for BellSouth for 27 years and has owned her own business in Bessemer for more than 10 years.
“Bessemer has helped shape who I am today. After retiring from my job of many years I realize I have the time even more so now to commit to the needs and concerns the people of District 6 need. I’m a strong advocate for this community and this city as a whole, and with the opportunity of professional growth, I’ve learned the value of serving others and being a positive influence within my community,” Williams said.
Williams won the District 6 seat in the Sept. 22 runoff, unseating Councilwoman Carla Foreman Jackson 420 votes to 240 after leading the four-candidate field on Aug. 25. She takes office with the new council in November.
“I believe I can make a meaningful difference on the Bessemer City Council by being a voice for the people and making sure their voices will be heard, respected and represented,” she said.
Through opportunities that will motivate economic growth by supporting local businesses and improving neighborhoods to make Bessemer stronger and safer, Williams is set to serve for a meaningful purpose.
