The employees at Bessemer City Hall will miss Bessemer Police Officer Doug Bessant. A retirement party was held in his honor on Wednesday, May 27, at the Frank House Municipal Golf Course in Bessemer.
For several years, Officer Bessant worked at Bessemer City Hall on Fridays. He was stationed at the front desk/security counter in the lobby of the building.
A professional, Bessant was always friendly and accommodating. The retirement party was planned by Keyana Hudson, Kim Silmon, and Mondrea Howlett.
Officer Bessant said, “I have enjoyed my 25 years of service as a police officer with the city of Bessemer.”
Bessemer Police Chief Gary Carmichael presented Officer Bessant with a crystal trophy at the party.
A native of Stone Mountain, Georgia, Bessant also served as the downtown parking officer for over eight years. People will remember seeing him in the three-wheel Cushman marking tires for two-hour parking.
He joined the police department in July of 2001, and during his career he also worked on the night shift, evening shift, and at the jail on the day shift.
He and his wife, Angie, will soon be enjoying a cruise to the Turks and Caicos Islands.
