Bessemer business owners giveback, share hope for kids

Ms. Jackson and Mason Lodge #12 representatives smile with kids.

For some, giving back is more than just handing out gifts, but a personal remembrance of knowing what wasn’t available or accessible in one’s own life—and what such a feeling could mean for a child.

This year, Michelle Jackson and Chris Mayweather exemplified compassionate and sincere doses of sentimental acts to those through their humanitarian shares this holiday.

“After I cried, I prayed because I didn’t think this would work,” Ms. Jackson told us in explaining the uncertainty that comes along with the want to help others. “I took everything to God, and He’s sent some wonderful people to help me along the way to ensure that the kids who come out will be smiling fully today.”

With help from (Dothan) Mason Lodge #12 representativesLeshia Harris, Roderick Harris, and Darryll Bouyer — congregated at MeMe’s Coffee Deli (415 19th St. North-Bessemer), which was a beacon for Christmas magic these past weeks.

They told us: “We look out for kids in the community by giving bicycle donations and more to our kids and the elderly. This means much, and it really leaves us speechless seeing the smiles and responses the kids give after receiving these gifts.”

Sherry Burrell, Ronnie Cotton, and others made sure the day was memorable for the kids, with much appreciation to Mayor Gulley, former Bessemer Police Chief Mike Roper, and Councilman Jarvis Collier.

Mr. Mayweather, along with the help of Mayweather Foundation supporter Lee E. Davis, shared community support and donations through the Mayweather Foundation, placing smiles and renewed warmth in many hearts through meals and present giveaways within Jefferson County.

Mr. Mayweather told us: “My biggest drive has been to encourage kids and bring hope to the homeless ever since the sixth grade. We just want to let our kids know someone actually cares about them with the purpose of putting an end to gang and gun violence, and if we older ones would think along the lines of helping them, we can get it done with something as simple as giving them a toy for Christmas.”

Mayweather Foundation supporter Mr. Davis also added: “I’m proud of young men like Mr. Mayweather who’ve shown what caring for others looks like no matter who they are and where they’re from, and I’m glad to be a part of such.”

We appreciate the passionate drive and efforts of these business men and women who have taken initiative to help those in need within Jefferson County, with a concentration on giving hope to the hopeless.
