Seniors enjoyed their time at the Senior State Master Games recently in Trussville.

“I’m going to get the gold,” Detrica Harris told us confidently as she and others prepared for the Senior State Master Games, which were held from October 6th–9th.

For ages fifty and up, senior citizens throughout Alabama met at Trussville’s Civic Center to compete in various games. From table card matches to basketball, this year’s events were a sight to see as well as a fun time for seniors while getting a good workout.

The seniors competed in several competitions which included the Softball Throw, Basketball Free-throw, Fun Walk, Bowling, Rook, Billiards, Shuffleboard, Dominos Single/Double, Nerf/Frisbee Throw, and Table Tennis competitions.

Some who participated and competed this year are a part of Bessemer’s Silver Boomers group. Besides competing, they also had a fun time with other activities associated with the Senior Games, such as A Lu’au Day, where they all dressed in grass skirts and leis.

Obviously, a good time was had — not to mention the varied medals they brought home.

Roy Brewster, Lula Echols, Mariah Frazier, Detrica Harris, Myoshia Holley, Flora James, Dorothy Johnson, Geneva Long, Amanda Maize, Sandra Nixon, Antoinette Peterson, Merlee Ragland, Wanda Rollins, Monica Tramble, and Bernadine Roby all won medals — gold, silver, and bronze — for their standout performances this year.

Detrica Harris told us in a moment of exaltation, “When it comes to dominos, I put the dots on them. I told you all I’d bring that gold (medal) home.”

We salute all seniors who continue shared efforts and independent progress throughout time to inspire us all.
