“This is a good way for families to come and enjoy themselves amongst one another, and I think it also helps keep our kids out of trouble,” local parent Dwayne Hughes told us at Bessemer Rec Center’s (Kenneth Gulley Rec Center) recent fall festival.

As seasons begin to change Bessemer Rec Center staff and Bessemer city employees turned on a fun filled and joyous atmosphere for Bessemer residents.

Rec Center staff helped set up the day’s events as they decorated portions of the rec center itself with seasonal decor such as stuffed scarecrows, hay (straw) fragments, traditional Halloween characters and pumpkins which caught visitor’s eyes as they journeyed within the rec and amongst its grounds.

From 5 p.m.-8 p.m. this past Thursday, residents, kids and families got the chance to enjoy everything imaginable as the rec center grounds resembled a fairground. From hot refreshments to cold drinks, moonwalks (bouncing houses), music, balloon art, face paintings and train rides, the Bessemer Rec Center was the place to be.

Many enjoyed themselves as they were also able to receive constructive information from Bessemer’s Fire and Police Departments, Farmers Insurance and AKA Sorority members along with many more.

Bessemer Mayor Kenneth Gulley also participated in the day’s events with warm laughter and greetings to all.

During our venture through the fun filled grounds of the day, we witnessed a group of kids competing in a basketball hoop challenge via Magic City Jump Shots. M.C.J.S. owner, Mr. Marcus Weathersby, told us, “Me and our crew really have enjoyed this event. There’s plenty of activities for the kids to involve themselves in, and the rec center had a nice lay out for the event which included lots of smiles and good energy, and we’re glad we helped make the event a success. We look forward to doing more events with the Bessemer Rec Center in the future.”

Rec Center Director, Mr. Mykee Jackson, also spoke with us, stating, “This year’s Fall Festival was truly a success, which is a great way to see so many families, friends, and community members come out to enjoy the evening together. The turnout was incredible as people participated in all the activities, from the games and contests to the food and entertainment. You could really feel the excitement and community spirit throughout the park.

“Events like this remind us what makes Bessemer special. Seeing everyone laughing, talking, and enjoying themselves made all the planning worthwhile. I believe the Fall Festival had a very positive impact on our city and shows that when we come together, great things happen in Bessemer.”

The turn of the seasons always holds something specially presented to Bessemer residents to be a part of – not only at our Rec Center but at our Bessemer Public Library along with fun programs and events from other local businesses, also.

Be sure to visit the Kenneth E. Gulley Rec Center (Bessemer Rec Center- 100 14th Street South- Bessemer, AL. 35020) or the Bessemer Public Library (400 19th St. North- Bess. , AL. 35020) for event flyers, information and other helpful guidance of knowledge for upcoming events in or out of season.

Let’s fall into positive and festive spirits this season and hold onto such good energies for the others that will come.
