The month of October is already here with some of us still not realizing the first Sunday has just passed, still reeling from the business of September.
Though gone, September should be highlighted for a number of things specifically in Jefferson County.
These include the controversy of the Jabari Peoples case along with the numerous fatal dog mauling situations; yet on lighter notes there were fun and communal efforts throughout the ninth month of the year. From car shows, talent shows, and even award shows, September proved trying yet ended triumphantly.
This year at Bessemer’s Rec Center (Kenneth Gulley Center) many came out to celebrate and show their talents through song, comedy and dancing. A show with inspiration from such renowned artists as Deniece Williams, Ike and Tina Turner, Anita Baker, Aretha Franklin, Barry White, Lisa Stansfield and others made a stop to entertain citizens of Bessemer. Judged by Bessemer’s Fire Department, the Silver Boomers group put on a fantabulous show for a very intrigued audience with Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner walking away with high rankings byway of the judges’ votes.
Also the month of September held the Gospel Sounds Music Awards with local artists and pastors such as Bryant Woods and Voices of Victory winning Community Choir of the Year honors and Pastor Alphonzo Bowen walking away with the Male Artist of the Year award.
Ms. Jeri Hunter (owner of Pink Icing Boutique) and her Pink Power Girl seminar held their Meet and Greet for 6th to 8th grade girls. This seminar and project geared by Ms. Hunter sets to put in motion basic skill training and communal renewal goals for our female youth.
Despite all that was going on, we are grateful our communities have taken time to still let their light shine through the clouds and share their marvelous talents and considerations with us as we look forward to making October, the tenth month of the year, even better.
