A grave marking service is a significant and solemn occasion.
Several weeks ago, the Birmingham Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution, SAR hosted a patriot grave marking ceremony in Hueytown.
The cemetery at historic Bethlehem United Methodist Church on Allison-Bonnett Memorial Drive is the final resting place for American Revolution Patriot the Rev. Capt. James M. Tarrant, Sr. He died on July 5, 1840, at his home near the cemetery.
The ceremony began with the Alabama Society, Sons of the American Revolution State Color Guard Presentation of Colors.
Compatriots Jack Hood, Tim Medders, Kevin Keith, Gary Brown, John Love and James Heartsill, III, each participated in the ceremony.
The Rev. Barbara Mosley, minister at Bethlehem Methodist, brought greetings on behalf of the church family.
Alabama Society, SAR, State President Dr. Ronald N. Dains welcomed the crowd.
National Trustee-Alabama, SAR Benny Hannah congratulated the chapter on their ceremony.
Ramsey Reich, chairman, 250 Committee, Birmingham Chapter, outlined the chapter’s scheduled 250 events.
Compatriot E. T. Brown introduced Capt. Tarrant’s descendants, Lisa Sitton Burleson and Lauri Sitton Rogers, who participated in the ceremony.
After the marker was unveiled, wreaths were presented on behalf of the Birmingham Chapter, Alabama Society, Black Warrior Chapter and the George Maris Chapter, Colonial Dames XVII Century.
Compatriot Bobby Horton performed an excellent musical salute.
Following the ceremony, a reception was held in the church’s Fellowship Hall.
