Hueytown Mayor Steve Ware with Hueytown citizenry celebrating Nature Preserve opening
The city of Hueytown has officially opened the West Rock Mountain Nature Preserve.
Following over a year of preparation, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on June 20. The nature preserve is located at 250 Dee Hendrix Road.
Hueytown Mayor Steve Ware cut the ribbon as a crowd of Hueytown citizens, elected officials, community leaders and nature lovers looked on and applauded.
Outdoor recreation is most important to Mayor Ware. The preserve features more than six miles of hiking and biking trails for the people to enjoy breathtaking scenic trails and the natural beauty of the landscape.
There are currently 11 named trails of recreational terrain for hiking and mountain bike enthusiasts.
Mayor Ware stated, “This nature preserve is about more than trails. It is about creating a place where families can explore, exercise, look upon nature and take pride in the beauty we have right here in Hueytown.”
A most notable feature in the preserve is Ware’s Ridge. It is a scenic ridgeline overlooking portions of the trail system and surrounding mountain terrain. It is named in honor of Mayor Ware.
At the event, future plans were announced which will include horseback riding trails.
