Bessemer man killed during Birmingham robbery

A homicide investigation is underway in Birmingham following a shooting Friday afternoon.

According to authorities, police officers were called to the Intown Suites on Commons Drive around 4 p.m. Friday.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as 20-year-old Donavan Reid Hanberry of Bessemer. The coroner’s office says Hanberry was shot during a reported robbery.

Police say that upon arrival at the scene, they found Hanberry and another man suffering from gunshot wounds.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue transported the victims to the hospital, where Hanberry died. Police say the second victim was taken to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Officials say the two men were involved in an altercation between the doorway of the motel and a parking lot when the shooting began.

Police say the hospitalized victim is also one of the suspects and that the two men were shooting at each other. There is no threat to the public, police say.

Officer De’Rell Freeman said at the scene:

“We just want to harp on, we have recently said something about the reduction in homicides and shootings, and we just want to point out that the Birmingham Police Department is actively working, we do have our boots on the ground, and just like our other homicides, we’ll figure out what happened with this one also.”

Birmingham Police are investigating the homicide.
