Father’s Day is June 21 this year. It’s just around the corner. I decided to talk with several fathers and get their thoughts about Father’s Day.
They all agreed that, though it is daunting, the best adjectives to describe fathers are loving, strong, wise, protective, honest, caring, God-fearing, and disciplined. Being a father means loving and providing for your children and family.
God commands us to honor our fathers and mothers. In furtherance of their beliefs, fathers teach us the value of hard work.
President Lyndon Johnson signed a proclamation in 1966 designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Father’s Day allows us a wonderful chance to celebrate and honor our fathers by showing our affection and gratitude for all they do for us.
The role of a father is a hard job, but an important job—and one they would not trade. In a busy, demanding world, being a father gives great joy and comfort to life’s journey.
What does it mean to be a father?
The quality of possessing a loving, kind, and understanding heart that allows us to love our children fervently and guide them gently.
Doing the best we can every day and making sure they know we are always there for them. By being a father, it has made all of us better men.
Tell me a good definition of fatherhood?
Supporting your children; it’s about showing up—for little league games, soccer games, dance recitals, or trying to help with a history project at 9 o’clock at night—regardless of how you feel.
Having the emotional and physical strength to provide security and stability.
Talk about a special Father’s Day memory?
My father was hardworking and provided well for us. One weekend, during football season, he surprised all of us when he took off work to go with us to an Auburn football game.
He really enjoyed that Father’s Day gift. We won!
How do you enjoy celebrating Father’s Day?
We are all happy just spending the day with our families at home and sharing a delicious, home-cooked meal.
However, we must have our favorite dessert.
What is most often rewarding?
When your children whisper, “I love you,” for no reason at all.
Do you have a favorite Father’s Day movie?
We all have enjoyed:
- Field of Dreams
- A River Runs Through It
- On Golden Pond
- Patton
- The Day After Tomorrow
- Father of the Bride
