At a recent Bessemer City Council meeting, Bessemer City Engineer Daniel Mayfield reported that a water line break had occurred at U.S. Pipe and provided an update to affected Bessemer residents.
Mayfield contacted ADEM and spoke with Wayne Holt, the ADEM employee responsible for issuing permits. Holt confirmed that U.S. Pipe currently has an active Industrial and Storm Water permit issued by ADEM.
U.S. Pipe Environmental Vice-President Scott Aler explained the circumstances surrounding the water line break to Mayfield. As a result of the break, cement lining powder residue remained on the ground before it could be cleaned.
The residue eventually entered the city’s drainage system. It was also reported that ADEM was made aware of the unfortunate accident.
An investigation was initiated and, once completed, ADEM will issue a formal report.
