A chat with Victor Olivo, owner/trainer, Obedient Companions K-9 Training, LLC

Originally from Venezuela, Victor Olivo, formerly of Hoover and now Alabaster, connects well with dogs and people. A professional dog trainer, he founded Obedient Companions K-9 Training, LLC in January of 2025. Victor’s goal is for dog owners to experience the joy of having a well-behaved dog. Located in Alabaster, their email address is info@obedientcompanions. com, and their website is www.obedientcompanions. com. Victor offers board and trainingobedience programs for all types of dogs. This good, solid and charitable man believes that the real training starts when the trainer leaves the room or the house. Also, out of every conversation, Victor seems to find ways to help people. Victor’s willingness to help people led him to start working with Full Circle Rescue and Sanctuary. His invaluable assistance prepares special assigned dogs for adoption.

What attracted you to dog training? Victor: I have always loved dogs and admired their capabilities and intelligence. I recognize the need to help owners and their dogs learn how to communicate. I love working with dogs and training them to become the best they can be for their owners and in so doing, reach their potential. This makes for happy dogs and happy owners.

Tell me about the business? Victor: I opened Obedient Companions K-9 Training with the vision and goal that the dogs reach their full potential and to help them and their owners build a good connection. The company operates out of Alabaster, and we serve all the surrounding areas.

What gives you joy? Victor: Training dogs. I also receive great joy spending time with my family and traveling.

What is the goal of the business? Victor: Our goal is to go beyond training the dogs; I firmly believe the dog-owner relationship is a two way street. We stay true to our slogan, “Guiding Dogs, Teaching Humans.” For the owner to feel confident handling their dog in any situation, we provide them with a lot of training and the proper tools to enhance the dog-owner relationship.

Tell me about your family? Victor: I am the oldest of four children of Pastora Castrillo Olivo and Victor Olivo, Sr. I have been married to Ana Martinez Olivo for 16 years, and we have a nine-year-old daughter Amanda and another little girl on the way. I arrived in the United States in 2000 and did not know any English. I still remember the day I learned how to say honey mustard for my spicy chicken sandwich.

Do you have a favorite breed that you train? Victor: I enjoy training Golden Retrievers.

What is your favorite meal? Victor: Tender and juicy, Brazilian Picanha is a delicious cut of beef that I enjoy grilled. It is served with a green salad, sweet potato, green beans and for dessert a slice of chocolate cake.

What quote inspires you? Victor: Excuses don’t get results.
