Valley Creek Cleanup Scheduled in Bessemer This Weekend
The City of Bessemer is looking for volunteers for the Valley Creek cleanup this weekend, which will focus on removing trash from waterways to prevent flooding caused by clogged drainage systems.
The cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, March 7, in areas around the 46-mile-long Valley Creek. Bessemer is one of four locations participating in the annual effort to remove litter from roads and areas near the creek.
“The trash gets in Valley Creek, it clogs up the drainage, and it causes flooding,” said City Councilmember Carla Jackson.
Bessemer police officer Sergeant Kendra Ward-Young has participated in the Valley Creek cleanup for 13 years.
“It’s an honor. It’s a way for us to engage the community, connect with the community, and give back to the community,” Ward-Young said.
Detective Justin Burmeister said the police department’s involvement helps strengthen community relationships.
“The police department coming out to help with them really helps with communication and trust with the police department,” Burmeister said.
While the focus of the cleanup is removing trash from waterways to avoid flooding, the effort also aims to protect local wildlife and provide a cleaner environment.
Councilmember Jackson said the cleanup helps residents who may not be able to participate in regular maintenance efforts.
“A lot of the residents over on that side are seasoned. So they can’t get out and do as much as some of the younger arms. This is an enhancement of the community as well,” Jackson said.
Jackson’s office will provide breakfast and lunch for volunteers, and participating high school students will receive eight hours of community service.
While the creek cleanup is a one-day event, Bessemer Police monitor for illegal dumping throughout the year.
“We would also want to stop people from dumping in certain areas. If you do see something, please call the police so we can try to come out and solve that issue. We’re trying to be proactive,” Burmeister said.
