It was an unforgettable experience!
Tammy Meacham, Freda York, Laurie Smith and Jenny Hickman — all members of the Alabama Civic Chorale — along with the entire chorus, were invited to sing at Carnegie Hall during the Christmas season.
The Artistic Board of Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY) extended the invitation to the group. DCINY was searching for excellent choruses to participate in a performance of Handel’s “Messiah.” The event was the presentation of the Christmas portion of Handel’s “Messiah” under the direction of DCINY Conductor and Artistic Director Dr. Jonathan Griffith.
Even with only four singers this year, the Alabama Civic Chorale was well represented in New York City at Carnegie Hall at Christmastime. In 2024, 35 members of the Civic Chorale participated in the mass production of “Messiah.” The production was an unforgettable experience and was presented to a sold-out crowd.
The three days of intense rehearsals were held at Fordham University at Lincoln Center. Following the performance, a reception was held at Bond 45, a restaurant just off Times Square that looked like an old “speakeasy.” The four singers found the Sheraton Times Square comfortable and convenient.
The ladies took every opportunity to see a few sights and have fun, including Rockefeller Center and the Christmas tree, the Fox News Building, Radio City Music Hall, Times Square, and Central Park.
It’s amazing what you can see when you get lost!
