During this festive and joyful Christmas season, we are especially thankful for our families. The special memories and warm moments together still fill our hearts with love.
Judy Moore Mathis, owner of Moore Coal Company in Bessemer, believes in giving. For in giving we receive.
Mathis and her cousin, Daniel Moore McCrimmon, had the idea to honor her late parents, Jim and Mary Ruth Moore, a much loved and wellrespected couple. They wanted to recognize their military service during World War II.
Recently, a 20-ft. flagpole was erected on the grounds of Moore Coal Company in their honor. At the dedication ceremony, a plaque was installed which read: “This flag and flagpole are dedicated in memory of Jim and Mary Ruth Moore who served our country with honor during World War II and all other Moore Coal Company employees, past and present that have served in the military.”
Mathis stated, “We wanted to honor the family and the employees that have enabled Moore Coal Company to grow and stay in business for all these years.”
Sgt. Moore, a Bessemer native, served in the U.S. Army from 1942–45, and Lt. Moore, from Estill Springs, Tenn., was a 1941 graduate of the West End Nursing School. She served in the Nursing Corps from 1942–45. They were stationed in France.
The tribute was also in celebration of their 96th year in business and the soon to be 250th anniversary of the United States.
