The official Christmas tree for the State of Alabama was delivered to the State Capitol on Monday, December 1, officially ushering in the Christmas season in Montgomery.
Governor Kay Ivey was on hand to receive the magnificent tree. This year’s official Capitol Christmas tree is a 38-foot eastern red cedar from Bullock County, generously donated by the Ray Allen family of Fitzpatrick, Alabama.
Adorned with 40,000 lights and ornaments, the tree stands proudly on the front steps of the State Capitol, where it will remain on display throughout the Christmas season.
The Capitol Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony was held the following Friday, December 5, at 5:30 p.m., when Governor Ivey officially flipped the switch to illuminate the tree. The theme for this year’s ceremony was “Every Light a Prayer for Peace.”
Joining Governor Ivey for the celebration were Rev. John Blount of Woodland Methodist Church, Karen Merrill, Vice President of the Garden Clubs of Alabama, and Lt. General Daniel Tulley, President and Commander of Air University. Also making a special appearance was Walker Burroughs, Vestavia Hills native and 2019 American Idol finalist.
Musical entertainment for the evening was provided by the 151st Army National Guard Band, which performed a selection of beloved Christmas songs.
