Lieutenant Tavares Pettus
A recent update from the Bessemer Fire Department announced the promotion of Tavares Pettus to the rank of lieutenant.
A Bessemer native, Pettus has been with the Bessemer Fire Department for 22 years.
Pettus stated, “I am grateful to Chief Hughley for promoting me to the rank of lieutenant. I have family and friends in Bessemer, and they are excited for me.”
A courageous firefighter, he works at Station One, 18th Street, where his important duties include:
- Serving as officer on Ladder One
- Training
- Educating the public about fire safety and prevention
- Continuing education in firefighting skills and EMS
Pettus’ strong work ethic is reflected in his dedication. When it is time to eat, Chef Pettus is the man. The men never go hungry.
During his teenage years, Pettus, 45, hung around a lot of firefighters. This contributed to his decision to become a career fireman.
