Carolina Avenue and 19th Street (above)
At a regularly scheduled meeting of the Bessemer City Council, with a quorum being present, the council approved a resolution authorizing the acquisition of property located at 1901 Carolina Avenue.
The purpose of the acquisition is for a new fire station. The property is a suitable location and in the public interest for the protection of the community. Having a fire station at this location will better serve the citizens of that area of the city by enhancing emergency response capabilities and public safety.
Following negotiations with the owners of the property, the price of $150,000 for the property with an additional $50,000 for due diligence and demolition costs was agreed upon.
Councilman Cleo King made a motion to approve the resolution. Councilwoman Carla Jackson and Councilman Teco Stephens seconded the motion. Upon roll call, the motion carried.
Bessemer Mayor Kenneth Gulley was authorized and directed to execute said agreement and to take all actions necessary to complete the purchase of the property on behalf of the City of Bessemer.
Demolition is scheduled to begin at the end of December.
