Chief Gary Carmichael
A 33-year veteran of the Bessemer Police Department, Captain Gary Carmichael was recently named Bessemer’s new police chief.
A native of Adamsville, Chief Carmichael has been with the Bessemer Police Department for 26 years.
He is a good, solid and effective man who knows Bessemer.
“I am extremely proud to have been selected police chief and to lead the best police department in the state of Alabama,” stated Chief Carmichael. “I would like to thank Mayor Gulley for giving me this tremendous opportunity.”
His goals for the police department include continuing to increase manpower, a further reduction in crime, and a greater participation in community events.
Today, Bessemer’s crime rate is much lower.
Chief Carmichael joined the department in 1999 as a patrolman. He worked as a detective for six years, promoted to lieutenant and then captain in 2024.
He has been married for 30 years to Linda Carmichael, and they have two children, Dr. Kiara Carmichael and Kayla Carmichael.
