October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Put yourself first and trust yourself. Early detection is the greatest chance for survival.

The first organized breast cancer awareness event in the United States was held in 1985. It was sponsored by the American Cancer Society.

For several years, the Bessemer Fire Department has sponsored a Breast Cancer Drive at the Tannehill Promenade in Bessemer. The drive is known as Fill the Boot and Breast Cancer T-Shirt Drive.

Bessemer Fire Department Lt. Bobby Horn is chairman of the fundraiser.

This year’s theme is “Finding the Cause is as Important as Finding a Cure and Prevention is the Best Intervention.”

Every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the month of October, the firemen will be positioned at the intersection of Regions Bank and Chick-Fil-A at the Tannehill Promenade. They will be selling Breast Cancer Awareness pink, Tshirts for $20.

The event benefits Brenda Brown’s Bosom Buddies, Pink Tops and other local agencies that aid women with breast cancer.
